PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
MOHAMMAD JAVAD B.A., MAcc.
1
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Introduction
This booklet has been written for the benefit of the first time Hajji and is also useful
for the returning Hajji. It is intended to provide a practical guide on the preparations
necessary in the UK and the actual performance of Umrah and Hajj rites when the
individual arrives in Saudi Arabia.
The information gathered for this project is based on literature and internet research as
well as my personal experience in preparation for, and experience of Hajj in
December 2006 returning to the UK in January 2007.
Note, all duas in this booklet have been taken from the 1952 book, ‘Elementary
Teachings of Islam by Maulana Mohammad Adbul-Aleem Siddiqui published by the
TAJ Company Ltd. of Karachi, Pakistan.
Hajj is a physical external journey as well as an emotional inward looking journey. It
is a ceremony of love, devotion and commitment to Allah Almighty and accepting
what He has determined for us in our lives. It is an opportunity for self-reflection, a
time for contemplation, self analysis, self-discovery and spiritual advancement. It is
an occasion to celebrate the global diversity of Islam when people from all walks of
life, nationality, class and race arrive in Makkah and Medina. Most will return to
their homes, with a changed attitude and outlook on the purpose of life, with a pledge
to Allah Almighty to follow the straight path as prescribed by Him through our
Beloved Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam).
The highlights of the Hajj include camping at Arafat in the afternoon and the stoning
of the 3 pillars (Rami) representing the devil (shaytan). When the individual stands at
Arafat praying to Allah for forgiveness Allah descends to the lowest heaven and says
to His Angels, “Look at my Servants who have come to me…I have forgiven them”.
The Rami is a ritual to cast out shaytan from our lives, minds and thoughts by
symbolically stoning the pillars.

HIGHLY IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATION: My personal recommendation
to the new or returning Hajji is to read Surah Yaseen daily as much as possible in
Masjid al-Haram in Makkah in front of the Kaba. Reading one Surah Yaseen
provides us with the sawaab of reading the equivalent of 10 Qurans (1 Yaseen = 10
Qurans). However, when we are physically in Masjid al-Haram we get 100,000 times
the sawaab of anything we do or read e.g. prayer, reading Quran, Surah Yaseen,
Durood Sharif etc. (Kaba = 100,000 times everything). Therefore, if one reads 10
Surah Yaseens every day in Masjid al-Haram for say, 10 days, we will return to the
UK having gained 100 Million Qurans Sawaab. Subhanallah. This is the through
the blessings of reading Surah Yaseen and the blessings of visiting Allah’s House in
Masjid al-Haram in Makkah.
10 Yaseen daily equals:
10 Yaseen X 10 Quran Sawaab = 100 Quran Sawaab
10 Yaseen daily in Masjid al-Haram equals:
100 Quran Sawaab X 100,000 = 10 Million Quran Sawaab (10,000,000)
10 Yaseen daily in Masjid al-Haram for 10 days equals:
10,000,000 Quran Sawaab X 10 Days = 100 Million Quran Sawaab (100,000,000)
The following options are available for us when we make our journey to Saudi Arabia
to visit the Holy Land (usually determined by the travel agent programme):
OPTION 1. Umrah (Hajj) only at any time of the year, followed by a visit to Medina
afterwards and finally return to the UK. [Jeddah-Makkah-Medina-Jeddah]
OPTION 2. Perform Umrah first after arrival in Makkah, then come out of Ihram-to
be put on at a later date, followed by performance of Hajj (in Ihram again) and finally
a visit to the Blessed Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) resting place in Medina
as last part of the journey. [Jeddah-Makkah-Medina-Jeddah]
OPTION 3. Visit Medina first after arrival, proceeding directly from Jeddah Airport,
then a trip to Makkah to perform Umrah followed by Hajj as last action in Saudi
Arabia, before returning to the UK. [Jeddah-Medina-Makkah-Jeddah]
OPTION 4. Perform Umrah first after arrival in Makkah, followed by a visit to
Medina afterwards and finally return to Makkah to perform Hajj. [Jeddah-Makkah-
Medina-Makkah-Jeddah]
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
3
If you decide to perform Umrah and Hajj separately, you will need to make 2 separate
niyats and change into Ihram on both occasions. That is, put on Ihram for Umrah and
after completing the Umrah change into ordinary clothes and then change into Ihram
again on the 7th/8th of the Islamic month in Makkah for the start of Hajj rites. This is
known as Hajj al-Tamattu.
Sahih Al-Bukhari vol.3, Hadith no. 45
‘Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radi Allah Anha) narrated Allah’s Messenger (Sall Allahu
alaihi wassallam) said, “Whoever performs Hajj to His House (Ka’bah) and does not
approach his wife for sexual relations nor commits sins (while performing Hajj), he
will come out (i.e. return home) as sinless as a newly born child (just delivered by
his/her mother).”

GENERAL INFORMATION
Preparations in the UK
1. Renewal of Passports: Saudi Government requirements are that a UK passport
must have been valid for 6 months. Therefore, you will need to renew your passport
(if necessary). It is best to make the application 7-8 months before leaving the UK.
This includes 1-2 months to allow for sending and receiving it from Passport
Authorities in the UK. For example, if Hajj is in November or December, send your
old passport with application form, fees and photos to the relevant office in the
February to March period.
2. Booking Hajj through Travel Agent: Consult friends, family and members of the
Muslim Community for their recommended Travel Agent. In 2006 there were
considerable difficulties for individuals who could not obtain visas and consequently
many people were disappointed. The Saudi government has a quota for the number of
visas it issues. Therefore, it is better to book early before the quotas are complete to
avoid disappointment. When booking through the Travel Agent make sure the
following questions are answered:
1. Will there be an experienced person or Imam with the group?
2. How far is the hotel/accommodation from Masjid al-Haram in Makkah?
3. How far is the hotel/accommodation from Masjid Nabi in Medina?
4. How many people will be sharing a room in the hotels?
5. How long is the stay in Makkah?
6. How long is the stay in Medina?
7. What will be the meal arrangements in Mina (tents), Arafat (tents) and Muzdalifah
(open air)?
8. Does the Hajj price quoted include the price of meals?
9. Can you use a taxi to travel between Makkah and Medina and from Medina to
Makkah?
10. What arrangements will the travel agent make for the sacrifice (Qurbani) during
the Hajj rites?
11. Will transport be provided to Mecca for Tawaf Al-Ziarah after the first stoning of
the Jamarat?
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
5
12. How far are the tents in Mina from the Jamarat for stoning of the pillars?
13. Will there be Ziyarah (visit of historical sites) in Makkah and Medina?
In addition, the travel agent’s role includes: making visa application on your behalf.
You must give all documents requested by the travel agent to him, including passport
pictures for ID cards, Meningitis Certificate (see 3 below) and your actual passport.
He will return your passport with ID cards and Airline Tickets. The travel guide will
also tell you where your Miqat (imaginary boundary) is outside Makkah. It is here
you will shower, put on Ihram, read 2 Rakah Sunnah, make niyat (intention) and say
the talbiya out aloud.
3. Doctor’s Appointment: Saudi Government requirements are you have certificates
confirming you have had injections for vaccinations and inoculation against certain
diseases. Therefore, you will need to make an appointment with the doctor informing
him/her you are going to Saudi Arabia. He/she will then arrange the appropriate
immunisation takes place and issue you with a Doctor’s Certificate which will be
stamped and signed. You will need this as evidence for the Saudi Authorities before
being allowed into the country.
4. Educate yourself on the Hajj rites: Learn the instructions in this booklet on the
requirements of Umrah and Hajj. In addition, memorise the Duas recommended
during the Hajj. Memorise the Summary of Hajj Rites and take it with you, thereby
enabling you to be aware of what has been done (when in Saudi Arabia) and what is
left to do.
TIP: Make your preparations, above i.e. booking travel agent, injections,
obtaining medical certificates and educating yourself 3-4 months before
leaving.
VERY IMPORTANT TIP: Start an exercise programme 3-4 months before
leaving. Hajj is physically demanding and there is a lot of walking involved.
Tawaf and Sa’i combined can be several miles of walking. Your toughest day will
be day 3 of Hajj with approximately 8 to 10 miles of walking. That is, from
camp in Mina to stoning (Rami) is 3 miles there and 3 miles back, followed by
Tawaf Al Ziarah in Makkah including Sa’i.

Suitcase Check List For Going to Saudi Arabia
1. Ihram: 2 pieces of white cloth made of 100% cotton. The first piece should be 45”
x 120” to be worn as the lower part and the second piece should be 45” x 72” to be
worn on the upper half of the body. [Note: take a spare Ihram with you]
2. Medication: Take some limited medication with you as if you were going an any
other holiday, such as painkillers, antibiotics, elastoplasts, as well as your daily
medication for any conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart conditions
etc. You will not be able to visit any pharmacies at Mina, Arafat or Muzdalifah
during the Hajj rites.
3. Spare Glasses and Sun glasses: If the glasses you are wearing get broken, you
won’t see much and your enjoyment of Hajj will be affected. In addition, it is
advisable to purchase sunglasses because the brightness of the sun will make it hard
to see what you are doing. If you wear prescription glasses buy a pair with reactolite
lenses. It’s worth the investment.
4. Quran & Zikr items: Holy Quran, Durood Book, Prayer and Dua book, Tasbeeh,
notepad and pen (for keeping a dairy of your experience).
5. Comfortable Clothes: Choose clothes that are comfortable and suitable for hot
weather. That is, shirts, t-shirts or the traditional sarwar kameez. Laundry facilities
are available, simply ask at reception in the hotel.
6. Toiletries etc. : Toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving gel/foam and razors (if you
shave), soap, soap dish, shampoo, deodorant or anti-perspirant, small comb, nail
clipper, face towels, kitchen towels, toilet roll and toiletry bag for holding all these
items.
7. Spare plastic carrier bags: for holding Ihram when visiting Masjid Aisha or
collected pebbles for Rami (stoning of pillars) when in Mina.
8. Hajj Pouch/Belt: You can purchase a special Hajj belt to wear at all times with
important items in it. The Hajj belt with zips is convenient as it does not bulge under
the Ihram i.e. it is harder to detect by others. This can be hidden below the Ihram.
TIP: Keep items you’ll need most often, in the pouch or belt. This includes:
medication, money, and ID Card.
9. Riyals: This is the Saudi Arabian currency. It will save you time and effort
queuing at banks etc. when in Saudi Arabia. Make sure you obtain low denomination
Riyals as it is difficult to get change when in Saudi Arabia.
10. English UK notes: You’ll need cash for when you are in Saudi Arabia
and for when you get back to the UK. There are money exchange places
conveniently situated near the hotels.
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
7
11. Flip Flops
12. Orvite-7 Sachets (or alternative) : Add these sachets to bottled cold water and
mix thoroughly. This will replace your body salts and minerals and re-hydrate you.
That is, refresh you like Lucozade Sport (or alternative) does.
13. Small Pillow or sofa cushion: Useful when in the tent cities of Mina and Arafat,
and during stay in Muzdalifah.
14. Alarm clock: If you find it necessary to help you get up.
15. Blanket or Sleeping Bag: Useful during cold nights when in Mina, Arafat and
open air in Muzdalifah.
16. Bath/Face Towels: Useful after performing Ghusl or if doing Wudu in hotel.
17. Jumper: It’s cold in Medina at Fajr and Isha times. Remember you are in the
open air and Saudi weather changes dramatically after sunset (Maghrib)
18. Shoulder Holdall Type Bag: for travelling light when visiting Mina, Arafat and
Muzdalifah, leaving the larger suitcase back in the hotel in Makkah.

Before and after leaving your family home for Journey
1. Apologise and ask forgiveness: of anyone you have upset or hurt in anyway in the
past. Going to Hajj while holding a grudge against someone, or them holding a
grudge against you, is not recommended for your own benefit. In addition, if you owe
someone cash or a debt, you must clear the debt before leaving the UK. Try your best
to resolve these issues, however, you cannot please everyone all of the time. Some
one may not forgive you, but at least in the eyes of Allah Almighty you made the first
move and attempted to make amends for the past. May Allah Almighty make it better
for you. Ameen.
On the day of departure:
2. Read 2 Rakah Nafl Prayer: at home ask Allah to give you a safe journey, look
after you whilst in the Holy Land and to help you safely return to your family here in
the UK.
3. Surah 97 Al-Qadr: to be recited after your prayer and before leaving your house.
4. After closing door behind you recite: BISMIILAH-HI TA WAQAL TU ALLALA
WA LA HAU LA WA LA QUWWATA ILA BILLAH HIL ALIY-YIL
AZEEM
5. Aytal Kursi: recite after waking up, then before leaving the house and recite before
entering the car or coach which will take you to the airport.
6. Bismillah… : recite this when entering the vehicle and carry on with any zikr of
your choice in the car etc.
Arrival in Saudi Arabia and Immigration Procedures: First Major Test of Sabar
(Patience)
Due to the nature of bureaucracy in Saudi Arabia and the vast numbers of people
entering the country (4 Million) over a short period of time, the Immigration process
is very slow. Expect to be at Jeddah Airport 6-10 hours filling in forms etc. and then
travel on a coach for 2-4 hours arriving in Makkah 12 to 14 hours after arrival in the
country. A summary of the process is set out below.
1. Form Filling in Immigration Control Room 1 (2 hours),
2. Form Filling and Computer Checks in Immigration Control Room 2 (2 hours),
3. Collection of Luggage and Scanning of luggage in Control Room 3 (1 hour)
4. Issue of Internal Travel Coupons
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
9
5. Arrangement of Coach for travel to Makkah (2 hours)
6. Government Bus takes you to Makkah (2-3 hours)
7. Issue of ID Bracelet from Muallim’s (Saudi Representative/Agent) office,
8. Arrival at hotel.
9. Once you have settled in, you are now ready to perform Tawaf al-Qudam (The first
Tawaf on arrival in the Holy City).
First sighting of Holy Kaba
1. Enter the Mosque with your right foot reciting Durood Sharif.
2. When you first see the Kaba for the very first time you should say Allahu Akbar
followed by 1st Kalma LA ILA HA ILALLAH HU MUHAMMAD UR RASOOL
LALLAH followed by Durood Sharif.
3. Make Dua. Islamic Scholars state the First Dua is always accepted. Therefore, the
first dua should be to ask Allah to grant all future duas, thereby ensuring that multiple
duas are accepted in the future. Finally end with Durood Sharif.
NOTE: The minimum duas (prayers) you should know to perform Hajj and Umrah
are the third KALMA (for Tawafs), Durood Sharif (i.e. Durood Ibrahim-from daily
prayers), RABANA ATINA FID-DUNYA HASANATAN WA FIL-AKHIRATI
HASANATAN WA QINA AZABAN-NAR (again for Tawafas) and the Talibya:
LABAIK ALLAHUMMA LABAIK, LABAIKA LASHAREEKA LA-KA LABAIK
INNAL-HAMDA WANAY MA-TA LA-KA WAL MULK LASHAREEKA LAK.
All other duas [except the dua when passing the Blessed Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi
wassallam) grave] in this booklet or any other Hajj book, are optional and
recommended. Most importantly your intentions (niyats) should be pure (saaf)
TIP: After reading your prayer, you should stay in the mosque and do zikr of
your choice for 10 to 20 minutes. That way, you will avoid the rush of people
getting back to the hotel.
TIP: Purchase a Holy Quran and leave a copy as a gift to Allah in Masjid Al
Haram for others to read. Make sure you tell the bookseller it is for the Masjid
and make sure it is stamped by him.
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
10
Internal Journeys e.g. Makkah to Medina
1. Give Muallim notice of your intention to go to Medina 48 hours in advance.
2. Muallim issues you or the travel agent representative with a receipt.
3. Passport arrives at time of journey and is handed to taxi driver or bus driver.
4. Bus or taxi driver gives your Passport to Saudi Authorities (Muallim) on arrival at
your destination.
5. Arrival at Hotel.
6. After you have settled in, you take a shower and change before visiting the Masjid.
TIP: Use taxis. This will be more comfortable and convenient and most
importantly save time. For example, the journey from Makkah to Medina by
bus will take 6-12 hours and by taxi will take 2-4 hours.
TIP: Keep contact details of the hotel phone number, friends and fellow
travelling Hajjis in your mobile phone in case you get lost.
TIP: Familiarise yourself with landmarks around Masjid al Haram. Take a 15-
20 minute walk around the outside noting the gate names and numbers. That
way if you get lost coming out you know which direction to walk in, allowing
you to return to the hotel.
TIP: Photocopy your passport and other important documents and keep them
safe in your suitcase. Remember your passport is with the authorities and can
get lost. At least you will have some form of identification as proof of who you
are.
General Advice when performing Hajj rites
Sabar: Be patient during the Hajj. The combination of hot weather, rush of people,
physical exertion, heavy sweating and physical tiredness make people irritable. Stay
cool and be patient. The Hajj is no ‘walk in the park’, it is meant to test your physical
and mental stamina and patience. In addition, it will test your personality because you
do not have all the comforts of ‘home sweet home’!
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO HAJJ & UMRAH
11
Right Balance: Keep the right balance between prayer and worship, resting and
sleeping and eating and drinking. That is, don’t be extreme. It is very easy to fall ill
because you get carried away with the emotion of being in the Holy Land, and don’t
rest or eat. You have to look after your health in order to complete the Hajj. Pace
yourself.
Communication: Most mobiles will allow connection to the UK. You can purchase
a Saudi SIM and place it in your mobile. Other alternatives include purchasing a
Saudi mobile for £20 (150 Riyals) with £15 credit (100 Riyals). In addition, you can
use special shops with cubicles for phoning home. That is, make your call and then
pay for it at the till. Remember to exclude (remove) the zero (0) from national codes
when phoning mobiles or landlines.
e.g. 0141 555 7777 DIAL 0044 141 555 777 (remove zero from 0141 code)
e.g. 07777111144 DIAL 0044 7777 1111 44 (remove zero from start of no.)
Shopping: There are plenty of facilities to cater for everything. From money
exchange places, pharmacies to traditional Pakistani Restaurants and take aways
serving desi food. Across form Masjid al Haram opposite the main King Abdul Aziz
Gate you will see a large red KFC sign. In this building there is the BIN DAWOOD
store. This is equivalent to a UK supermarket with all items available from fruit,
drinks, to batteries. In addition, you’ll find many outlets for buying gifts and a halal
Burger King. The equivalent store in Medina is located in the general area where the
Hilton Hotel and KFC are situated.
TIP: Avoid drinking cold drinks with oily food. During the last Hajj all one
could hear in both Masjids in Makkah and Medina was people coughing
constantly.

completing the Tawaf. For example you can perform Tawaf in the morning and the
Sa’i in the afternoon.
Note: During Sa’i women do not need to jog/run during their respective 7 walks
between the two hills, unlike men who must run along the distance represented by
green lights overhead.
Shawt: The term given to one completed circuit/circle of the Kaba as part of the
Tawaf. Seven shawts equals one Tawaf. The starting and end point for a shawt is at
the black sacred stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
Tabiya: Loud zikr of ‘Labaik Allahumma Labaik, Labaika lashareeka la-ka labaik,
innal-hamda wani ma-ta la-ka wal mulk, lashareeka lak,’ after going into Ihram and
recited throughout performance of Hajj. Female pilgrims are required to recite it in a
low voice. [To be recited 3 times followed by Durood Sharif]
Tawaf: The act of circling the Kaba 7 times in an anti-clockwise direction with the
Kaba on one’s left hand side.
Different types of Tawaf
1.Tawaf al-Qudum (The very first Tawaf on arrival in Makkah i.e. the ‘hello’ or
‘I’ve arrived’ Tawaf):
Chracteristics unique to Tawaf al-Qudum;
1.Ramal: the first 3 circuits/circles are performed with the chest forward and the
shoulders rolling.
2.Idtiba: take one end of the unsewn white cloth, place over the left shoulder, then
bring the other end over the back, then bring under the right arm(pit) and finally
drape over the left shoulder to complete the process

2.Tawaf al-Nafl (Voluntary): The voluntary Tawaf which can be performed at any
time during the day or night. There is no Sa’i or Ihram necessary to perform this kind
of Tawaf and is performed in ordinary everyday clothes.
3.Tawaf al-Umrah: The Ihram is required for this Tawaf.
4.Tawaf al-Wada (The ‘I’m leaving Makkah Tawaf’): This Tawaf is performed before
leaving Makkah for the next destination. This Tawaf is performed in ordinary
everyday clothes and there is no Sa’i after Tawaf al-Wada.
5.Tawaf al-Ifadah or Tawaf al-Ziyarah (The End of Hajj Tawaf): We change into
ordinary clothes first and then perform this Tawaf on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah as
the last action of Hajj in Makkah. Once this Tawaf is completed we return to Mina
for Rami (stoning of 3 pillars). Note: 2 Rakah Prayer and Sa’i are only required after
Tawaf al-Ifadah if performing just the Umrah (i.e. Hajj al-Tamattu). However, the 2
Rakah Prayer and Sa’i is voluntary and recommended after Hajj al-Ifrad and Hajj
al-Qiran.
Note: If any type of Tawaf is interrupted by Azan (Muslim call to prayer), you must
stop Tawaf, read the necessary prayer and then resume the Tawaf from where you
stopped. That is, it is not necessary to resume the Tawaf from the black sacred stone
(Hajar al-Aswad).
Umrah: A set of actions and spiritual obligations performed at anytime of the year
and does not involve going to Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat as during the Hajj.
Yawn an-Nahr: Sacrifice day on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah.
Yawm at- Tarwiyah: The 8th day of Dhul Hijjah and the start of Hajj activities when
the pilgrim proceeds to Mina on this day.
Zam Zam: Spring of flowing water inside Masjid al-Haram to the east side of the
Kaba. Hajar (Radhi Allah Anhu), the wife of the Prophet Ibrahim (Alayhi Salam)
searched for water for her son Ismail (Alayhi Salam) and because of Allah
Almighty’s Mercy a spring appeared miraculously in the desert exactly where it is
today.

Procedure for Tawaf
1. We perform 7 circuits/circles/shawt around the Kaba in an anti-clockwise direction
with the Kaba on our left hand side. (7circles = 1Tawaf)
2. We perform Tawaf al-Qudum in 2 unsewn white cloth. That is, take one end of the
unsewn white cloth, place over the left shoulder, then bring the other end over the
back, then bring under the right arm(pit) and finally drape over the left shoulder to
complete the process (Ihram-Idtiba)
3. We perform the first 3 circuits with the chest forward and the shoulders rolling.
(Ramal) i.e. walking in a fast pace with small steps.
4. We recite ‘Bismillah Allah-u-Akbar’ at the start of each shawt when we see the
Hajar al-Aswad (scared black stone 4 feet from ground built into Kaba). This is
represented by the brown/black marble on the ground and a green light at night.
5. We kiss the Hajar al-Aswad at the start of each shawt or if not practicable we raise
our hand towards it and then kiss the hand symbolically. (Istilam) We recite the
following dua when the kiss takes place:

VISIT TO MEDINA
Medina is the city of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) and a place of
tranquillity, peace and refreshment for the soul. It is from here he (Sall Allahu alaihi
wassallam) formed his base for spreading the Message of Islam before the conquering
of Makkah and it is here that he (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) is laid to rest.
Since the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) gave us Islam and taught us
everything, the Pilgrim is expected to visit Medina out of love and respect for him,
although there are many unfortunate individuals who do not believe a visit to Medina
is necessary as part of Hajj. May Allah Guide Them, Ameen. Your Travel Agent will
tell you when you may visit Medina i.e. before or after Hajj. Make sure your Travel
Agent has arranged for 8-10 days here, to complete 40 prayers which is Sunnah. [The
practice of the Blessed Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam)]
The grave of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) is located within Masjid
al-Nabi in the South East corner of the Masjid. Whilst in the Masjid it is
recommended to read 2 Rakah Prayer at Riyad al-Jannah (literally Jannah: that is
where part of Al-Jannah is), an area between the minnbar and the grave of the Holy
Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) represented by the green patterned carpet, or
alternatively you can read the 2 Rakah Prayer anywhere else in the Masjid. It is also
recommended to spend as much time in the Masjid as possible offering all your
prayers, reading the Quran, Durood Sharif (Durood Akbar-see later) and the Master
book of Durood Sharif the Blessed Dalailul Khairat. [Sending the sawaab (blessings)
of what you have read upon the Holy Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) Soul
and all who have passed away]
NOTE: Be careful as there are security representatives at the entrances to the Masjid,
who check bags when entering the Mosque. No food is allowed into the Masjid and
they can confiscate books which they believe are ‘Bidat’ (False Inventions). This
includes the Dalail.
One should enter the South West of the Masjid at Bab al-Salam and then proceed
along the corridor passing the Holy Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) grave on
our left hand side, reciting Salams when passing by the door of the grave (as below).
In addition, you should also send duas to Hazrat Abu bakr Siddique (Radi Allah
Anhu) and Hazrat Umar ibn Al-Khattab (Radi Allah Anhu) also buried alongside him.
You will then pass an empty grave reserved for Hazrat Isa (Alayhi Salam) in the
future after his second return and death. Finally, you will exit at the South East corner
of the Masjid at Bab al-Jannat al-Baqi.

TIP: Purchase a Holy Quran and leave a copy as a gift to Allah in Masjid Nabi
for others to read. Make sure you tell the bookseller it is for the Masjid and
make sure it is stamped by him.
Dua when passing the grave of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam)
‘Peace be upon you, O Prophet of Allah and His Mercy and His Blessings. Peace be
upon you, O Apostle of Allah. Peace be upon you O Prophet of Allah. Peace be upon
you O beloved of Allah. Peace be upon you O Best in the Whole of Creation of
Allah. Peace be upon you O Intercessor of the sinners (before Allah). Peace be upon
you and your descendants and your companions and all your followers.’

Highly Reccommended: Durood Akbar [The Greatest Durood]
You should read Durood Akbar after the Fajr (Morning) Prayer in the Mosque in front
of the Blessed Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) Resting Place. If you read
Durood Akbar after Fajr for 40 consecutive days i.e. without a break or interruption,
you may be blessed with a meeting with the Blessed Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi
wassallam) in your dream. That is, what is commonly referred to as Deedar-e-
Mustapha. [Note: I say ‘may’ because there is no guarantee, it depends on your
intentions and how you practice Islam and your love for him]
Therefore, it is advisable to starting reading Durood Akbar after Fajr when you are in
the UK before going to Hajj, timing it so that the 40th reading is in Medina.
Alternatively, start reading the first Durood Akbar when you arrive in Medina,
completing the 40th reading after arrival in the UK several weeks later.

Other places of interest in and around Medina
1. Jannat al-Baqi: This is the cemetery across from Masjid Nabi on the east side.
This is where the Prophet’s (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) relatives and companions
(Peace be upon them all) are buried. You should do dua here just as you do dua in
cemeteries in the UK i.e. Surah Al-Fatiha etc.
2. Masjid Quba: This Masjid is 4 miles from Medina and is the first Masjid built by
Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam), when he spent a few days in Quba. You
should read 2 Rakah Prayer here and another 2 Rakah Shukrun (Thanks to Allah).
3. Masjid al-Qiblatain: This Masjid is 3 miles from Medina. In the early days
Jerusalem was the Qibla where Muslims faced to pray. Later Makkah became the
Qibla. It is here at Masjid al-Qiblatian that the Divine Order came to pray towards
Makkah. It was during the Zuhr prayer that the first 2 Rakahs were read facing
Jerusalem and the last 2 rakahs were read facing Makkah. You should read 2 Rakah
Prayer here.
4. Jabal Uhud: The battle of Uhud took place here when the enemies of the Holy
Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam) tried to destroy Islam. Three thousand
soldiers from Makkah faced 700 followers of the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi
wassallam). It is here that the Holy Prophet (Sall Allahu alaihi wassallam),was
wounded and his uncle Hamzah (Radi Allah Anhu) was martyred. This is where he
and the other Muslims are buried. Again do dua for the deceased, that is, Surah Al-
Fatiha etc.
